OVERVIEW
Leon McKay's studio, working out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard at the intersection of metal, furniture and spatial design. It operates on special projects, collaborations and limited editions rather than a standing catalogue.
The studio's own phrase for the method is an eclectic use of raw materials with a refined, contemporary sensibility, which in practice means steel finished to a standard that raw steel is not usually given.

CONTEXT
The Navy Yard matters. It is a working fabrication district, and the studio is inside it rather than designing at a distance from it, which is why the work does not have the look of metal specified by someone who has not welded.
The position is deliberately between things: not a furniture brand, not an architecture practice, not an art studio, and the limited-edition model is what lets that stay true.
WHAT TO NOTICE
- 01Raw material, resolved finishThe steel is not disguised and not left rough. The tension is between an unglamorous material and a very controlled surface.
- 02Edges are the detailWith no applied ornament, the whole quality reads at the corners and the terminations. Look there first.
- 03Spatial work and objects togetherThe studio moves between a room and a single piece, and the same vocabulary survives the change of scale.
