OVERVIEW
An animated series from 2023 by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, expanded from their short film Scavengers. The survivors of a wrecked freighter are stranded on a planet whose ecology is elaborate, indifferent and frequently lethal.
Almost every threat and every solution is biological. The planet runs on symbiosis, parasitism and metamorphosis, drawn with the patience of natural-history illustration rather than the shorthand of monster design.
WHY IT MATTERS
An essential counterpoint: alien futurism derived from ecology and symbiosis instead of machines.
CONTEXT
Made with the French studio Titmouse and animated in a flat, hand-drawn style that keeps the organisms legible. Bennett and Huettner have cited Moebius and the European comics tradition, and the debt is obvious in the line and the colour.
It is the counter-argument to the archive's machine futures: a science fiction in which nothing important is manufactured.
WHAT TO NOTICE
- 01Every organism has a life cycleCreatures are not encountered once. The show returns to them at different stages, so the planet behaves like a system rather than a bestiary.
- 02Violence without maliceNothing on the planet is hostile in the dramatic sense. Things eat, reproduce and use each other, and the horror comes from indifference.
- 03Flat drawing, deep spaceThe line is simple and unshaded while the staging is deeply layered. Complexity is in the composition, not the rendering.
- 04Technology losesThe human equipment degrades throughout. By the end the useful tools are organisms.

Both strip the usual science-fiction surface away. One replaces it with ecology, the other with rock, weaving and ritual, and both end up stranger than the neon they avoid.
