NOEMAR
Noelani Mattstedt + Marcel Bednarz · 2025–
OVERVIEW
A Vienna studio founded in 2025 by Noelani Mattstedt and Marcel Bednarz, both Design Academy Eindhoven graduates. They make furniture, functional sculpture and narrative objects in limited editions and commissions.
The work is kinetic and often comic: Ferdi, a wall automaton; FLTR, a rotating glass table with coloured discs; Tendere, modular steel shelving held with webbing; Würstelhocker, a sausage-shaped stool on a wooden fork.
WHY IT MATTERS
A very new studio treating furniture as interactive functional sculpture rather than static décor.
CONTEXT
The studio's motto is la necessità di bellezza, the necessity of beauty, and the output is deliberately closer to the Italian radical tradition than to Dutch conceptual design, despite the school.
They have shown at Salone del Mobile, Dutch Design Week and the Lake Como Design Festival, and materials run across wood, leather, steel, glass, brass and cast rubber rather than settling on one.
WHAT TO NOTICE
- 01Objects that moveSeveral pieces rotate, pivot or actuate. The interaction is the design rather than a feature of it.
- 02A joke that is also well madeWürstelhocker is a sausage on a fork and is also a properly resolved stool. The humour does not excuse the construction.
- 03Colour used sparingly and hardFLTR's coloured discs are the exception in an otherwise material-coloured catalogue, which is why they work.
CONNECTIONS
- THE DIGITAL AND THE HANDGoslo Studio / Alejandro Gómez Slok
Both refuse to let a process become the style. Goslo finishes 3D-printed geometry until the print stops giving itself away; NOEMAR builds kinetic objects that are jokes and are also properly made.
